What Is an Endoscopic Discectomy?

Disc degeneration by osteophyte - close up

A discectomy is a spinal procedure in which all or a portion of intervertebral discs between your vertebrae are removed. However, there are a number of variations to the procedure. Check out this overview to learn more about endoscopic discectomy procedures.

About Endoscopic Discectomy Procedures:

An endoscopic discectomy is a type of minimally invasive spine surgery in which the spine surgeon utilizes a small tube with a light and lens, also known as an endoscope, to view and remove the damaged discs under direct x-ray visualization. Unlike other discectomy procedures that access the disc by cutting through various layers of tissue, endoscopic discectomy can be performed using an extremely small incision less than one centimeter long.

Ideal Candidates:

While the best way to determine if an endoscopic discectomy is right for you is to consult with your New Jersey spine surgeon, there are a number of signs that you may benefit from the procedure. For example, an endoscopic discectomy may be the solution for you if you are suffering from:

  • Chronic lumbar, thoracic, or cervical pain.
  • Sciatica.
  • Leg pain.
  • Nerve-related symptoms such as tingling or numbness in the extremities, generalized weakness, and loss of bladder or bowel control.
  • Deep muscle pain or muscle spasms.

Endoscopic discectomies provide a number of benefits over traditional discectomy procedures. This endoscopic procedure not only reduces the need for standard surgical incisions but also reduces the risk of surgical bleeding, post-operative bruising and swelling, and pain. Individuals who undergo endoscopic discectomy also experience much shorter periods of downtime than those who undergo a traditional discectomy.
